What makes a house a home? What makes a home special? Some people have lived all over the world....in very interesting and exotic locations. Whether you are one of those people or someone who is still living in the house you were born in, our experiences in our homes help make us who we are today. My first home (that I actually remember) was my childhood home, in Massachusetts. I lived there from the age of six until I got married fourteen years later. My parents continued to live there for many more years before retiring to Florida, so my children also have fond memories of that home.My first home with my husband was an apartment in New Hampshire. I don't have much memory of it except being pregnant with my first child while living there. We were only married a year when we moved into our first house...new construction...financial help from HUD. We moved in just 2 months before giving birth to our daughter. All three of our children were brought up in that house. That is why it is the most special place I've lived.
It started out as a simple cape.
Over the years we dormered and added two bedrooms and a bath upstairs, we finished the basement, and we added a two car garage with a huge living room above it.
So many birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, graduations, and births celebrated. We even had a wedding in that home....
First words were spoken there.First steps were taken there. Family wasn't the only thing that made that house so special....it was a very special neighborhood.Partridge Lane is a small cul-de-sac with only 17 homes. At that time, it was mostly young families. Our children played together and we all looked out for each other. The school bus stop was at the end of my driveway.
I remember one day, sitting in the yard with some of the neighbors and several of the kids went riding by on their bikes. One of the parents said "Just think some day they will be driving cars! " It seemed so far away at the time.
We had neighborhood yard sales, Olympic games, baby showers, cookouts, and Christmas ornament swaps. Our biggest neighborhood event was the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The moms gathered on Friday morning and filled the plastic eggs and the dads hid the eggs on Saturday morning. The kids searched assigned yards, based on their age, to keep it fair for all.
Ask any one of my children and they will tell you " It was the best neighborhood! " We lived there for 24 years. We have lived in two homes since then and although both are more expensive homes and better built homes, neither one comes close to being as special. Partridge Lane will always hold a very special place in my heart!
