Preparing your home for sale? It's all about the details. Buyers are drawn to neat, organized, light and bright spaces. I'm not just talking about the rooms in your house. The storage spaces within each room should be addressed too. Kitchen cabinets, closets and built-in bookcases that are styled and spacious are not only noticed by potential buyers, they are remembered. Taking the time to prepare these areas makes a big difference....it actually increases the perceived value of your listing!Here's one of my own favorite bookcase transformations:![]()

How to Stage Your Bookcase When Selling Your Home.
If you are selling your home, what you’ve read about staging and preparing it for sale holds true for the shelves and bookcases within it. ![]()
Perception is key. Your buyer needs to see space. As they take in a room, make sure their eyes aren’t bouncing from object to object but rather allow them to see the WHOLE...after all, that is what they are buying.
Also, if what you are selling is a built in bookcase, you’ll want them to SEE it...not your things.
What you can do to stage your bookcases and shelves...
1.Clean them
Remove everything, then give your shelves a good cleaning. If they’re in need of it, paint them.
2.Just because there’s a flat space doesn’t mean something has to go on it.
Leave space. Not every flat space needs to have something on it. And if your shelves are adjustable, you can remove a shelf or change the spacing to add interest.

3.For most of the shelves I see, I recommend removing about 75% of what you have on them.
I love living in a home with a bookcase full of books. When I grew up, it was my favorite place to be. BUT, when you’re preparing your home for sale, go ahead and pack up most of it.
4.If you can, remove your paperbacks.
They only add to the eye bounce.
5.Consider removing the book covers. The solid blacks and tans of the covers can give the bookshelf a more cohesive look.
6.Pack up those cute little things you’ve been collecting.
These cause eye-bounce.
7. Incorporate a framed photo or art placed next to a few books.
Place some books on their backs next to books that are upright.
8.Think 3’s.
Think about grouping items in 3’s, just as you would on a table.

First impressions do count when selling your house. And when your buyer leaves, make sure that one of the impressions they take with them is one of space.![]()
