If you have a blog or website, or even just an email address, then you have been contacted by a spammer. They even send text messages to our phones now! You know the ones I'm talking about....The lawyer contacting you on behalf of the dead oil tycoon, who wants to send you several million dollars.The long lost relative you never knew you had....suddenly you're an heir!The businessman that wants to send you extra money for your trouble and you can keep most of it, just send a couple hundred back to him. ![]()
The messages usually contain grammatical errors and misspelled words....the sender usually claims to be some sort of authority figure promising great fortune and has only the best of intentions.Sometimes it's bank information and/or social security numbers they are looking for, sometimes it's a link they want you to click or a phone number they want you to call.I would like to think that most of us are smart enough not to fall for this foolishness, but I have to wonder because they keep on coming. They wouldn't be doing it if it weren't profitable for them.The most common way to handle spam is to simply delete it. Report it, of course, if you have that option....but don't ever engage.Don't engage! Well...that is unless you have a really good sense of humor and want to give the spammer a chance to feel just how irritating communicating with a stranger can be. Check out this video that shows just how much fun it can be to turn the tables on these dirt bags and give them a taste of their own medicine. Thank you James Veitch for sharing your very funny approach to dealing with spammers! Although I find this very funny, I do not in any way suggest you should communicate with these people. I have had some great fun at the callers' expense many times during election years when bombarded with poll calls. Those people are also annoying, but harmless. Spammers can be dangerous and it's probably best not to mess with them. UPDATE:Unbelievable! An hour after posting this I found this message on my home page:![]()
